GCCG: 25 years old and still growing
The Gay Classic Car Group celebrates its 25th Anniversary in 2013 - a scary thought for those of us who can remember going to its first events back in 1988 when a few gay classic car fans living in London thought that they would try having a small display at Gay Pride to see if there was any response. Since that time the Club has grown to over 800 members and partners. The introduction of online membership applications together with active promotion in both the gay press and classic car publications has accelerated our rate of growth and the club is growing at around 15% year on year, a contrast to many single make clubs which are experiencing falling membership.
There are more and more events each year too. With over 40 events last year there is something every weekend for most of the summer season and beyond, thanks to our strong team of regional organisers. There are also several monthly social meetings around the country to keep us going through the winter too. Mind you, with our last event in November and the first one on New Year's Day, there's not much of a closed season.
One of our highest profile activities has been a stand at the Classic Car Show at the National Exhibition Centre, where our eyecatching stand based on the theme of the Yellow Brick Road, including Dorothy and friends, and featuring an inflatable rainbow arch, could be seen throughout the exhibition hall. The highly visible stand and wide range of vehicles attracted a diverse range of visitors, gaining us a number of new members and some great PR for the Club.
In 2013 we hosted Eurotour, the annual gathering of gay classic car enthusiasts from all over the world which rotates around four host countries in Europe. As 2013 was also our 25th anniversary we held a major celebration with over 200 participants, making it the largest Eurotour ever held anywhere, with visitors coming from as far afield as the west coast of the USA.
We also have a growing online community including a very active Facebook group. This is open to non-members as well as members - but if you want to attend our events as a non member guest you'll need to contact an Area Organiser.
We think there has never been a better time to join GCCG, but if you want to 'try before you buy' you can come to an event as our guest. Just contact your nearest Regional Organiser via the Local Contact page, or via firstname.lastname@example.org. We look forward to seeing you soon!
